HUNDREDS of people from both sides of the border attended the grand opening of a new hotel at the weekend.

Following a £1 million makeover, the former Garden House Hotel was relaunched under the new name Greens at Gretna last Friday.

And Alasdair Houston, chairman of Gretna Green Ltd, which owns the border hotel, welcomed more than 200 guests and thanked local contractors for their hard work on the project.

He also congratulated the 30-strong new employees and the team from sister hotel Smiths at Gretna Green for their help in ensuring the venue was ready for its first wedding.

Mr Houston said: “We were on a fixed deadline for a local couple who had already booked their wedding.

“First impressions are very important, therefore everyone worked very hard to ensure we were ready.”

He added: “I am very proud of our team, who are dedicated to making Greens a success. It’s a hotel I hope business people will choose to use as well as an addition for wedding couples to the area.

“Most important is providing a new and different eating experience for local people and we hope to see many familiar faces dropping in for a coffee or enjoying dinner at Greens.”
