NURSERIES in the region are celebrating securing accreditation for the Breastfeeding Friendly Scotland Early Learning Scheme.
Penpont Nursery was the first early years setting in the region to achieve it, followed soon after by Laurieknowe Nursery and then Wise Owls at Moffat, Whithorn Nursery, Dalry Nursery, Johnstone Nursery, Malory Day Nursery, Thornhill Playgroup and Belmont Nursery.
Accreditation to the Scottish Government scheme requires 80 per cent of staff undertaking a training module in infant feeding, knowledge and understanding of breastfeeding to be incorporated into the early learning curriculum, and to normalise and support breastfeeding for parents of children at the nursery and staff who work there. A champion is designated in each of the early years settings to promote and encourage key aspects of the scheme with their colleagues, from the point of signing up and beyond accreditation.
Eithne Clark, infant feeding co-ordinator with NHS D&G, said: “On behalf of the infant feeding team, we would like to thank everyone who has worked to achieve, or is working towards, accreditation and our partners in the early years education teams for their help and support with this success.”
The Scottish Government’s vision for Scotland is to be ‘a society that values breastfeeding and supports mothers to breastfeed’.
