ONE YEAR ON . . . the remains of the Cuthbertson Bridge after it was washed away last October

Annan – A Tale Of Two Bridges group chairman Stuart Thompson yesterday said although work is slow, it is ongoing.

Members have been busy carrying out surveys, coming up with ideas and fundraising.

Results from their public poll have been forwarded to Dumfries and Galloway Council who will soon carry out a feasibility study. Only after that can funding be allocated for any construction.

Stuart said: “The main thing is to have the general public involved.

“We have had very positive feedback, the community want to see them (the bridges) replaced. We have made progress over the last 12 months.

“We have come up with the idea of a temporary bridge using the A75 flyover, that is in the hands of the roads department now.

“We have asked the council to sit down with the roads department, that would be a far less expensive option.

“It is not in our remit to make any structural decisions.”

Explaining the need for a feasibility study, he added: “It gives facts and information in order to replace the bridges. There are all kinds of rules, regulations, policies and procedures that need to be followed.”

The next update will be at the November meeting, which Stuart hopes council representatives will attend. He said: “Progress is being made, but people have got to appreciate that it will be slow.

“Local councillors are being very proactive, they are wholeheartedly giving us their support.

“We will be knocking on the door of the Scottish Parliament as well.

“We all want to see the bridge/bridges replaced and we will be keeping up the pressure.”
