Bridge Street repairs long overdue, it’s claimed

LOCKERBIE residents are fed up being ‘forgotten about’ by the council’s roads department as the town is still waiting on repairs to Bridge Street.

The matter was raised at Lockerbie and District Community Council monthly meeting on Tuesday by stalwart Ken Bailey, who is demanding an explanation as to why the town is still waiting on repairs to the pavements and roads on Bridge Street, four years after they were first reported.

Mr Bailey, a former chairman of the group, said: “They came [roads team] and put in the 20 mile an hour parking and the central line but they’ve just painted a white line in the middle of the road, right at the top of the street. And the road surface is gradually getting worse and worse and worse at the turn into Express Tyres, and the houses vibrate when vehicles go down because of the potholes.

“And the pavement on the bridge is an absolute disgrace, people are falling on it and nobody will do anything about it and it really winds me up because we keep coming in here and discussing it, then it gets forgotten about.”

In response to the concerns raised, Annandale North Councillor Carolyn Wilson said: “I have chased it up a number of times and I will do again, but this is the response I got about the white lines: “To update- this work has been provisionally booked with the lining contractors, subject to the cost estimate, the cost may dictate that this is work is unable to be completed in the new financial year. If the costs meet the budget and procurement requirements a date will be organised for its completion at the earliest opportunity.”

However, community councillors were not enthused by the response and Mr Bailey added: “So what we’re saying is the can has been kicked down the road again.”
