Bringing Flora home

THE life and legacy of a trailblazing female surgeon from Annandale will be celebrated at a special event this week.

Dumfries Museum is bringing home the memory of Dr Flora Murray and raising her profile on the 100th anniversary of her death.

Born in Dalton in 1869, she helped found the Endell Street Military Hospital in World War One with her partner in life and work, Louisa Garrett Anderson.

And she was also a keen supporter of women’s suffrage.

An online talk about her achievements will take place on Tuesday night from 6.30 pm as part of Women’s History Month.

It will feature four different speakers:

Judith Hewitt, curator of Dumfries Museum; Wendy Moore, award winning author of Endell Street: The Trailblazing Women who ran World War One’s Most Remarkable Military Hospital; Sarah Paterson, curator First World War and Early 20th Century, Imperial War Museum; and DJ McDowall, creative director/LGBTQ+ activist/producer of StoryTrails: Dumfries’ Augmented Reality app, featuring Dr Murray.

Also this year, the museum is delighted to share, for the first time, a portrait and artefacts associated with Flora. It has been loaned by the Royal Free Hospital Charity and features on the Bank of Scotland £100 note.

Meanwhile, a full exhibition on her incredibly impactful and inspiring life will be opening in May.
