Burgh minister moves on

LOCHMABEN has said ‘farewell’ to its minister this week.

Rev Paul Read and his wife Joy have packed up the manse and said goodbye to their neighbours, friends and parishioners.

After almost eight years at Lochmaben Church, as well as serving Applegarth, Johnstone and Sibbaldbie, Rev Read is moving to Erskine where he hopes to indulge his love of aircraft thanks to the proximity of Glasgow Airport.

Before being called to the religious life, Rev Read served as an airline captain, latterly flying 747 planes for British Airways.

He was ordained 21 years ago, while serving as an advocate for foreign medical missions in the USA.

Rev Read said: “Shortly after that came a call to Scotland via a short assignment on the Isle of Benbecula.

“The last seven-and-a-half years here in Lochmaben have been a great privilege and my wife, Joy, and I will have many happy memories.

“The community of faith have inspired and taught us much and we look forward to following the growth of the church family in the years ahead.

“I must thank Joy, she has been fantastic. A wonderful mother, nurse and wife.

“In the words of the great Apostle Paul, ‘I thank my God upon every remembrance of you.”
