Burns’ bairns are best in Scotland

DUMFRIES and Galloway once again emerged victorious in the National Schools Burns Competition.

The primary gold and silver medallists from the regional Schools Burns Competition earlier this year were recently back at St Joseph’s College in Dumfries to represent Dumfries & Galloway Burns Association in the National Schools Burns Competition run by the Robert Burns World Federation.

There were teams from across Scotland competing, but Dumfries and Galloway put in an extremely strong performance, winning the best singing and instrumental team prizes and were crowned overall champions.

Individual competitors won an impressive haul of cups and medals as well, including wins for Calum Cable in P1-3 reciting; Zia Copeland in P4-7 chanter; and Matthew Owens in P6-7 instrumental and also named best overall instrumentalist.

DGBA Schools Competition convener, Fiona Evans said: “We are extremely proud of all our young people who took part in the competition. They put in a sterling effort and their performances were all impressive.

“Every competitor’s scores are counted, so they all contributed towards us winning the team prizes and the overall best team prize. They all supported each other and showed an excellent attitude.”

She thanked the area’s committee and local volunteers for their support of the event, as well as Cllr Maureen Johnstone who presented medals and the council for their input.
