Calls for Lockerbie resilience plans after record storm

A PROPOSAL to create a resilience plan in Lockerbie has been put forward.

It comes after the impact that Storm Eowyn had on the town two months ago.

Lockerbie community councillor Simon Poole questioned the reaction to the record-breaking storm and noted some mistakes were made.

And he pointed out that the town doesn’t have a resiliency plan unlike other areas across the region, but suggested that could change in the future.

This would mean that Lockerbie Community Council, organisations and businesses in the town can support the residents when an event occurs that needs support, shelter, food and assistance.

A sub group of the community council is set to be created to help guide any interested parties or people on how they can provide support for future incidents. Support from Dumfries and Galloway Council will be provided to enable the plan be agreed and put into place.

At last week’s community council meeting, ward officer Scott McMeeken said: “It’s great everybody is keen and has interest in getting a plan sorted. This is not the first time I’ve been to a community council meeting and the storm subject has come up.

“It was a delayed recovery last month but the actual response itself was very good. We had a de-brief and we have to realise that the warning we had was a danger to life. It was a region-wide warning not just certain areas. It was a rare event.

“We do need a conversation that would create a community resilience group. It can be anything, like just checking on neighbours and make sure people are okay.”
