Charity bridges social care gap

A NEW project has been launched locally to support young people with learning disabilities to develop life skills.

Capability Scotland’s Dumfries and Galloway service has set up Capability Connectz for 16-25 year olds to enjoy many of the same experiences and opportunities as other young people across the region. It comes after the cessation of a similar college course, which the charity says has left a huge void in the area.

Service manager Rebecca Queen said: “We have listened to the needs and concerns of young people and their families and are delighted to create a space for them to build skills and relationships and truly thrive.”

Capability Scotland secured £34,457 from The Holywood Trust to improve their facilities and cover the staffing and other related costs of the project.

Presenting the cheque, Holywood Trust grants officer Sammie Smith said: “We are committed to helping young people fulfil their potential through our individual and organisational grant-giving, and are delighted to support Capability Scotland through this project.

“We can’t wait to see Capability Connectz progress and the impact it has on young people.”
