Chilly challenge for sleepover friends

TWO Lochmaben girls will brave the winter weather later this month to fundraise for Shelter.

Best friends Bobbi Brown and Veda Shields-Burns, both 11, will be sleeping out in the royal burgh without a tent next Friday to fundraise for the housing charity which helps find accommodation for those in need.

It was Bobbi and her mum Abbie McNeil who came up with the idea, as Abbie explained: “It was something that Bobbi and I had discussed and she was really keen to do it and she wanted to invite along a friend to do it with her. We’ve always felt that everybody deserves a safe, warm home and Shelter is a well deserving charity, so the girls took it upon themselves do it and it’s gone from there.”

Since then Bobbi and Veda have thrown themselves into fundraising, setting themselves a £300 goal. On Saturday they were outside Lochmaben’s Tesco with their fundraising buckets and are on their way to reaching their target: at the time of publication the girls had raised over £200 via their Just Giving page and the bucket donations.

Although the girls will be sleeping out without a tent, proud mums Abbie and Victoria will be taking precautions to protect the pair from the changeable weather.

Abbie added: “They are a bit nervous about it because they’re doing it without a tent, but we’ll be making sure that they’re wrapped up warm with sleeping bags, thermals, hats, scarves, gloves, hand warmers.

“I’m very proud of both of them, and I’d like to say thank everyone who’s supported them, the word of mouth has been amazing and we’re so grateful.

“It’s a worthy cause and it’s nice that two youngsters are doing something that will help others, especially at this time of year.”
