Christmas countdown kicks off

LOCKERBIE is ready to jingle bell rock this weekend as they prepare to light up the town.

The annual Christmas lights switch on takes place tomorrow on Lockerbie High Street, with fun lining the street from 1.45 pm.

First up to entertain the masses will be singer Taylor Nelson performing an acoustic set. He will be followed at 2 pm by the Addiction Dance Group.

Next up is Annan’s Rainbow Tribe, followed by a performance from the local Guides.

And 3 pm marks the deadline for lanterns to be handed in. Local children were asked to design and create their own lantern and hand them into the town hall for judging.

This year’s judges are Alastair Yule and Jason Morin of Muirhall Energy, sponsors of the lights switch on and the company behind the Crossdykes Windfarm, near Lockerbie.

Lockerbie Academy’s Emilia Robinson and Leelah Grant-McMillian will take the stage next to perform numbers from the school’s up-coming show ‘School of Rock’.

Highland dancers from Symar Academy will also entertain festive revellers and Lockerbie Salvation Army have signed up to sing a variety of hymns.

At 4.30 pm Lockerbie RBL Pipe Band will take centre stage, in the lead up to the 5 pm switch on. But the fun continues to 6 pm with perform- ances from Ellie McConaghey and Lockerbie Beavers.

Meanwhile the streets will be lined with stalls selling presents from prosecco to wreaths and more.

Pleased to sponsor the event, senior develop- ment manager Alastair Yule, of Muirhall Energy, said: “Lockerbie is a beautiful town, with a great sense of community. The organi- sers of the Christmas Lights do a wonderful job in getting everything ready for the community to come together for the switch on this Saturday, and in maintaining the display for residents and visitors to the town to enjoy.

“We are delighted to sponsor the Lockerbie Christmas Lights again and look forward to seeing the town lit up over the festive period.”

Lockerbie Lights spokeswoman Helen Hag- gart added: “Lockerbie Christmas Lights Committee wish to thank this year’s sponsor Muirhall Energy for their generous nancial contribution and continued support. Without this generosity, events such as this would not be possible.”
