FESTIVE CHEER . . . the Solway Sharks, in their Christmas inspired jerseys, claimed victory at home to Hull on Saturday

And the victory sees the Sharks narrow the gap between the two sides in the overall league standings to just three points.

Solway’s limited edition Christmas jerseys brought the luck after they got off to the best start possible when Scott Henderson tipped a strike from Liam Stenton over Zimozdra at 1:38.

Sharks continued to dominate possession in the opening period, forcing Emil Svec to break down the play with a slash at 9:37. Despite efforts from Mason Alderson, Solway failed to punish the Seahawks on the powerplay.

Hull returned for the middle frame with a clear plan to level the score and fired a series of shots on Jordan Marr through their first line, but Solway retained their narrow lead with a strong defensive display early on.

Just before the 31st minute Kell Beattie fired a one-timer past Zimozdra from the left face-off circle after a threaded pass from John Dunbar to double the lead for Solway.

Tensions began to spill, resulting in Davey Phillips and Scott Henderson sit for roughing after the Seahawks D-man dropped the gloves in his own zone at 31:51.

Hull landed themselves on another PK as Phillips returned to the box minutes later for cross checking Torran Anderson at 35:29 but Solway failed to find a way past Zimozdra seeing the score still sit at 2-0 to the Sharks after the middle frame.

Solway’s first line worked the puck around the Hull zone quickly after puck drop for the final period, yet Zimozdra matched their efforts to keep his side in fighting contention.

John Dunbar soon deked past Zimozdra to extend the lead on 46 minutes.

However, the Seahawks quickly answered back as captain Bobby Chamberlain fired a one-timer past Marr to open the scoring for the visitors.

Hull reduced the deficit to a single goal at 53:05 as Josh Hodgkinson slotted the puck past the line, assisted by Owen Sobchak and Bobby Chamberlain.

Seahawks pulled Zimozdra in favour for an extra attacker in the final minute, but the final score finished at 3-2 sealing a fourth consecutive victory for the Sharks.

On Sunday the Sharks travelled south to take on the Tigers after a string of home games, taking a 5-2 defeat despite claiming two points the previous evening.

The hosts claimed the opening goal at 12:52 after Devon Skoleski tipped the puck over Marr’s shoulder following the strike from Ryan Leese.

However, the Sharks quickly answered back through Stenton with a rocket from the blue line following the feed from Alderson at 13:42.

Despite Sharks having an advantage early in the second period, Scott McKenzie claimed a loose puck as Marr was splayed out in his crease to put the Tigers ahead once more at 24:22.

Telford’s Devin Skoleski soon claimed a breakaway for the hosts but was brought down by Kell Beattie resulting in a penalty shot at 34:13. Canadian import Skoleski fired the puck wide of Marr’s catcher to extend the lead for Telford on the opportunity.

Seconds later at 34:55, Liam Danskin was called for holding the stick which allowed James Smith to fire past Marr on the powerplay.

The ice cut saw momentum shift in Solway’s favour as Nolan Gardiner fired a one-timer from the slot after the feed from Dunbar just 21 seconds into the third period on the powerplay.

But Telford fired their fifth goal across the line at 49:17 with a strike from Adam Harding, assisted by Joe Aston to regain their 3-goal lead approaching the final ten minutes of play.

Tensions which had been brewing for most of the game eventually spilled at 58:36, seeing Callum Boyd drop the gloves with Jake Price resulting in over 50 PIMS being dished out equally between the two combatants. A further burst came at 59:43 as both Joey Coulter and Joe Aston were called for roughing and elbowing respectively, maintaining 5on5 play. The final PIMS of the evening were handed to Beattie on the buzzer at 60 minutes for abuse of officials, finalising a 5-2 victory for the Tigers.

Solway return to home ice this Saturday, December 28, for an important match-up against the Leeds Knights.

This game is the final home fixture of 2024 – and kids’ tickets are just £1.

Doors open at 5.30 pm, with the puck dropping at 7 pm sharp. Get your tickets now at the Sharks’ official website, sharksihc.com/tickets, or purchase them in person at the Dumfries Ice Bowl.
