IT is going to cost £9632 to get Kirkcudbright Parish Church bells ringing again.
The outdated bell striking mechanism is more than 50 years old and townsfolk have been missing the sounds of the church chimes.
And a new digital system is on the cards, if they can raise the money needed for the change.
The church has put in a bid for £8600 in grant funding to Kirkcudbright Common Good Sub Committee.
In it their application it’s explained that the new system would be much easier to maintain and will give greater choice around the operation of the bell.
It goes on: “The residents of the town very much appreciate the reassuring sound of the church bell and we have received a lot of comments regretting the absence of it.
“People see it as an important part of daily life in Kirkcudbright.
“The new bell sound system will have a greater range of bell chimes which we will perhaps use on special occasions e.g. weddings etc.
“A new motor will be fitted to the clock, but the outward appearance will remain the way it has for several generations.”
The Church has committed £1032.70 to the project from its own funds and need the Common Good to provide the remaining.
However, there is only £5767.02 in that fund at the moment so if councillors do back the bid, it will mean there would be no remaining budget for the rest of the financial year.
The meeting takes place next week when the final decision will be made.
