YOUTHS have been reported inside the old Rex Cinema in Lockerbie.
And the town’s community councillors are concerned about youngsters getting into the derelict building on a number of occasions over the past two weeks.
At this week’s meeting on Tuesday night, group member Robert Hume highlighted further worries that the gate at the back – which connects the Bridge Street building with the back of the town hall – had been locked and at the amount of rubbish being left there.
Mr Hume said: “Youths have got back into the Rex again. There’s now a lock on the gate which is quite concerning because the Lockerbie Town Hall fire exit is there. That could be dangerous if anything happens.”
Group member Hayley Nicholson responded: “They have broken in so much over the last two weeks and I’ve been told that the police are actively trying to catch whoever is in there.
“It’s a den and open space that the youths can do what they want. The gates been locked by the owner.”
Fellow community councillor Roger Claymore believes that the gate shouldn’t be locked during the day but thinks it should be shut at night.
Annandale North councillor Carolyne Wilson said she would look at the situation and report back at the next meeting.
