Cinema screens wedding wishes for groom

LONSDALE Cinema was the host to treasured memories as film crews arrived on Wednesday morning to film a Welsh wedding programme.

‘Priodas Pum Mil’, or 5k Wedding, arranges a wedding on a £5000 budget and is run on Welsh language television channel S4C.

While the show has been running for seven seasons, this is the first episode to be filmed in Scotland.

With the help of presenters Trystan Ellis-Morris and Emma Walford, the friends and family of the lucky couple arrange the big day from the transportation, location, food and attire, including the wedding dress, all without giving any details to the bride or groom.

The show brought 35 friends and family members of both the bride and the groom to help them organise the wedding of Sara and Daniel Bell, who tied the knot on Wednesday afternoon at Gretna Green.

But prior to the ceremony, the groom, his son and his best man paid a visit to Lonsdale Cinema’s screen three.

A teacher in Wales, Daniel watched videos sent to him by his pupils at the cinema, congratulating him on his marriage.

Alan Towers, owner of Lonsdale Cinema, said: “The programme got in touch in May, asking if we’d let them film in one of our screens.

“They arrived last week and used a drone to take some footage of the cinema from the air, and commented on how lovely the cinema was.

“Usually programmes would use some of the bigger cinemas like Cineworld, Odeon or Vue, but it was nice for them to choose an old-school cinema like Lonsdale.

“The cinema has been here since 1917, and it is 106 years old. Between Covid-19, rising energy bills and the writers and actors strikes, more of these older places have been closing down.

“It always warms my heart when tourists compliment the cinema.”
