A RURAL road which has been shut for five years is finally set to reopen next week.
Dumfries and Galloway Council slapped an emergency road closure order on the C61a at Waterbeck in March 2019 after a reinstatement of a utilities track was deemed to have failed and the road surface became too dangerous to drive on.
Since then villagers have been calling for action to expedite the repairs and get it reopened, while also expressing concerns about the impact on the B722, which was used as the main diversion route.
However, the local authority was in dispute with SP Energy Networks for several years over liability and responsibility.
That was finally resolved late last year, allowing repairs to start earlier this year.
And a council spokesperson yesterday said: “The major works for the C61a are on schedule to be completed today, Friday 10 May. A final check of the site is scheduled for Monday, with the road being opened to the public from Tuesday, May 14.”
