Community farm in fundraising plea
WINTER APPEAL . . . Mossburn yard manager Siobhan Webster is pictured with the fundraising thermometer and Christmas tree at the farm this week

AN animal sanctuary at Hightae has launched a major fundraising appeal as they enter into their most expensive time of the year.

Mossburn Community Farm is seeking to raise £10,000 to keep things ticking over during the winter months as essential costs remain higher than ever.

The farm cares for around 100 animals at any one time. They have larger animals including horses, cattle, sheep and pigs as well as smaller species such as rabbits, guinea pigs and even a tortoise.

With hay and straw set to increase in price, increased feed costs, and a number of animals requiring special dietary supplements, monthly outgoings are currently exceeding what’s coming in.

However, there has been a positive response since the appeal was launched, with almost £1600 being raised so far.

Yard manager Siobhan Webster yesterday said: “We normally do a winter fundraiser every year. But this year the target is a lot higher than normal.

“The money coming in now is not enough. The cost of everything is very high – fees, vet bills and bedding. We have also got a few elderly animals that need extra care.”

She added: “We have a £10,000 goal just to boost our funds back up. The winter is the most expensive time of year.

“We have set up a fundraising page and we are also looking to see if people would like to set up direct debits, we have always had a small band of loyal supporters doing this. Reliable monthly income is the most important thing to us.”

There is also a memorial Christmas tree at the farm. And with a minimum donation of £2.50 you can add a star to it in memory of a pet.

Three paid staff work on the farm alongside a team of 20 dedicated volunteers. If people would like to lend a hand they are always welcome to come and get involved.

Siobhan said: “At this time of year it could be a New Year’s resolution if people have a couple of hours spare. They can give us a hand on the yard, in the community garden, in the charity shop or help to fundraise.”
