Concert to celebrate life of teacher

A SPECIAL day of song is to celebrate the life and legacy of a music teacher who selected the music for the event ahead of her death earlier this year.

Audrey Brockett was a teacher at Dalbeattie High School for many years, also teaching at Lockerbie Academy, and was heavily involved in a number of the region’s choirs.

Audrey, who died aged 54 on June 19, was a member of the Dalgarno Singers, was involved in Dumfries and District Music Festival Association, led The Lockerbie Singers and set up the all-women group The Dolce Divas.

Pointing to her work with the National Youth Choirs of Scotland (Dumfries Branch), close friend and former headteacher Frank Davis said: “That was one of her most notable achievements.

She was its founding director, and led the Dumfries team for about 15 years’’.

The special event at St John’s Church in Dumfries on November 11 will celebrate her legacy, with a fundraising ‘Come and Sing’ event in the afternoon open to anyone who knew Audrey, resulting inaconcert in the evening.

The Dalgarno Singers will be conducted by her former pupil Rory McLatchie; at least 30 members of The Lockerbie Singers are coming back to revive that group; Robert Lind will sing, as will the Dolce Divas and NYCOS Dumfries (Alumni), with plans for a massed choir.

Audrey selected the music, and as a passionate opera fan it includes ‘Speed Your Journey’ by Verdi.

Collections will be held for Cancer Research, The Brain Tumour Charity and The Motor Neurone Disease Association. Further information can be obtained from Frank at [email protected] or by calling 01461 204404.
