Contractor secured for school roof repairs

A CONTRACTOR has been secured for the repairs to Beattock Primary School, with work due to start in the coming weeks.

The 12-year-old school was shut back in April and all the children moved to Moffat, where they remain, after investigations found wet rot, water damage and fungal growth in the roof.

Experts said the roof would need “extensive repairs”, with an estimated cost of £1.6 million.

Annandale North councillor Stephen Thompson confirmed appointment of a contractor on Tuesday.

He said: “The council has procured a main contractor and the design is underway, with a view to mobilising to site in the next few weeks.

“These initial enabling works will allow work on the new roof to start early in the new year.

“There are no current concerns at this stage and it was confirmed that there is no requirement for any additional planning application.

“The council will issue regular communication updates to the elected ward members and to the community once dates are confirmed.”

The works are expected to be completed by August 2 next year.
