DUMFRIES and Galloway Council is introducing a new Prevention of Sexual Harassment Policy to tackle workplace misconduct and comply with upcoming legal changes.
The policy, which will go before councillors for approval next week, aims to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all council employees.
A recent Government Harassment survey revealed that three-quarters of the adult population have experienced sexual harassment, with 29 per cent experiencing it in the workplace in the past year.
And new UK legislation, the Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act) Act 2024, requires employers to take ‘reasonable steps’ to prevent harassment or face increased compensation claims in tribunals.
The council’s new framework follows guidance from the Equality and Human Rights Commission and the Chartered Institute for Personnel and Development. It includes clear reporting procedures, whistleblowing protections, and a trauma-informed approach to supporting victims. The policy outlines sexual harassment as a evident risk to everyone in the office.
Training on the policy will be mandatory for all staff, with additional sessions for managers and over 70 council wellbeing champions. The council is also working towards accreditation under Scotland’s Equally Safe at Work programme, which promotes gender equality and safer workplaces.
The new measures aim to ensure compliance with the Employment Rights Bill and establish a robust system for addressing workplace harassment.
