Council give backing to park bid

DUMFRIES and Galloway Council this week agreed to ‘support in principle’, Galloway’s bid to become Scotland’s next National Park.

Councillor Ian Carruthers said: “Galloway is a spectacular part of our region with landscape ranging from hills to sea, which we share with visitors who get to experience the beauty of our area for themselves. Having been described as ‘Scotland in miniature’ our council recognises that there is a lot of interest and support for a formally designated Galloway National Park.

“I am pleased that we have agreed to support the next steps and look forward to seeing the outcome.”

Meanwhile, NFU Scotland are to host a national webinar next week to inform their members about the nomination process.

The organisation has repeated its opposition to the creation of new parks and called for independent evidence of the value that existing parks bring to farmers, crofters and the local community.
