Counting the cost

LIFE is still getting back to normal across Dumfries and Galloway after Storm Eowyn swept through on Friday.

Hundreds of people locally are still without electricity with Scottish Power Energy Network (SPEN) teams working flat out to get everyone back on.

A raft of schools are closed today either due to the lack of power, heating failures or building issues. The list includes Caerlaverock Primary, Colvend, Kirkgunzeon, Lochrutton, Cummertrees, Johnstonebridge, Hardgate Primary and both Lockerbie Primary and Secondary.
Other secondary schools are operating non uniform days to help families.
There’s a warm hub at Johnstonebridge Centre today with refreshments and the chance to have a shower, while the free food van from SPEN will be parked up at the old Little Chef serving hot meals. There’s also a free food truck at George Street in Whithorn.
Dumfries and Galloway Council have advised that the only road that remains closed in the whole of the area is the B6318 Langholm to Canonbie. However, they also say that Mminor roads will continue to be affected into next week.
