POLICE in Cumbria have been thanked for lending a helping hand to Dumfries community officers.

The Cumbria Roads and Firearms Policing Team stopped a car near Carlisle which was being driven by a man from Glasgow who was wanted for a high value theft from a supermarket in Dumfries.

After arresting him, Dumfries officers also established that he was wanted for a number of thefts of high value goods from across Scotland.

He will now be held in custody pending his court appearance.

Meanwhile, on their return to Dumfries the force was alerted to another high value theft taking place. It led to the arrest of a man and woman from Peterborough in relation to the theft of alcohol.

A police spokesperson said: “Our community officers work closely with retailers and other police forces to share information regarding crime groups who target our region to commit theft.

“Organised shoplifting costs us all and we know that those responsible are often involved in other forms of criminality.

“We will continue to work with retailers to deter and detect those involved.”
