Deadly roads

DUMFRIES and Galloway is the ninth deadliest area in the UK when it comes to fatal road accidents.

It made the top ten on a map of the UK’s most dangerous roads, based on data gathered by the Department of Transport over a five year period.

Between 2012-16 there were 48 fatal crashes locally, or 3.21 per 10,000 people. And that made it the sixth worst in Scotland for deaths too, with the Orkney Islands topping the table.

Meanwhile, the new statistics identified the A75 as the most dangerous road in the region.

The worst county in the whole of the UK was Rutland, which saw 5.1 crashes per 10,000 people.
