Debate set for council elections

A HUSTINGS will give Dumfries residents the chance to ask candidates standing in the local government elections questions about local issues.

Friends of the Earth, Dumfries (FoE Dumfries) is hosting the Any Questions-style hustings on Thursday evening at The Stove at 7 pm, before the polls open next Thursday morning.
Debby Hamilton of FoE Dumfries said: “In the current difficult times we felt it was important voters in Dumfries had the chance to put questions to some of the local candidates and hear what they have to say about some of the key issues facing the town.”
The event features a seven-person panel comprising of nominated candidates for the Dumfries wards — one each from the four political parties and a further three independent candidates who were selected randomly.
Independent candidates who were not selected are invited to attend as audience members if they choose.
Featured on the night will be: Malcolm Johnstone (Conservative / Nith ward), Sandy Rogerson (Green / Nith ward), Andrew Crosbie (Independent / Nith ward), John Dennis (Independent / Nith ward), John Martin (Labour / Nith ward), and Rob Davidson (SNP / Abbey ward).
‘Food, Culture and Regeneration’ is the theme of the hustings, and questions relating to this theme will be prioritised, but questions on other themes may be taken at the discretion of the organisers.
Although the hustings is a free event, it is ticketed as The Stove can accommodate around only 40 people.
Tickets are available from The Stove or by emailing [email protected]
