TO mark Debt Awareness Week, which runs until Sunday, the Dumfries Christians Against Poverty (CAP) Debt Centre are trying to combat the fears of finances.
CAP is offering free debt help while also raising awareness on the topic.
Centre manager Paula White said: “Some may think people just get into debt because of over spending on luxuries, but that isn’t the reality for the people we’re helping at CAP.
“Most people who come to us are overwhelmed by problem debt because of a change in circumstances that has caused a drop in their income.
She explained that there is no one reason why people fall into debt, citing it may be for health reasons or a recent loss of a job. With these circumstances, it can substantially drop their income, while also taking a toll on one mentally. Not only does it create stress daily, but Paula says it might be hard for people to seek help.
“It takes tremendous courage for someone struggling with debt to reach out. Some are ashamed to admit they are in debt, others are afraid of the unknown and may be wary of seeking debt help,” added Paula.
Dumfries CAP urges people to utilize its free services, in-person debt advice, and coaching sessions.
While Debt Awareness Week is just this week, CAP emphasises its ability to take on more clients, hoping to help everyone no matter the background.
