Decision due on quarry

IT will be decision day next week for a controversial quarry application near Hightae.

The bid by RD Nairn Ltd for a new rock quarry on Cocket Hill, near Rammerscales Sawmill, first went before councillors in February.

But they postponed it so a site visit could be held, and also to request extra information and advice from SEPA and Environmental Health.

That visit will take place today and so the application will be discussed at the planning applications committee on Wednesday.

Planners are still recommending it is approved, despite 24 objections and opposition from both the Royal Four Towns and Dalton and Carrutherstown Community Councils.

Meanwhile, SEPA have confirmed to the council that the scheme does not reach the threshold for a response from them.

Environmental health officers at the local authority were asked to provide observations on potential health risks from quarrying.

Their response is included in a council report on the application and says: “They acknowledge that such operations can generate dust that has been reported to be harmful to human health.

“In order to safeguard nearby residents, they recommend a suspensive condition requiring further details to be submitted for consideration relation to dust emissions.

“In addition, the condition would ensure that further analysis of health risks be investigated and that appropriate mitigation, if required, is identified and adhered to during the course of the development.”
