DG's Italian families

A DIRECTORY of Italians living in Scotland in the 1930s has been published.

And it includes details of those living Dumfries and Galloway at the time.
They were:
Dumfries:
A Bertucci, a tradesman from St Michael Street
Maria Bertucci, a landlord from St Michael Street
Giuseppe Biagi, an ice cream vendor from Brooms Street
G Fusco, a shopkeeper from Friar’s Vennel
R Marcucci, of Friar’s Vennel
Antonio Motroni, ice cream merchant, of Queen Street
E Soave, cafe owner, of Ann Street
G Toni, shopkeeper in Queensberry and Balmoral Streets

Annandale:
M Coppola, of Lockerbie
M De Luca, of Lockerbie
M Di Luca, of Lockerbie
Luigi Polosi, of the ‘refreshment rooms’ in Market Place, Langholm
G Toni, shopkeeper, of Annan
L Yannetta, confectioner, of Annan

Galloway:
Confectioner Umberto Cafolla, of Newton Stewart
Shopkeeper Sergio Casavecchia, of Castle Douglas
Shopkeeper Quintilio Fusi, of Thornhill
Shopkeeper I Petrucci, of Whithorn

The archive is explored in an exhibition at National Records of Scotland this month and includes examples of the census taken by the Italian Consult in Scotland from 1933-1940.
It is hoped the census itself will become available for research later this year.
