A CRACKDOWN on illegal motorcycles is on the cards after issues in communities across Annandale — including Lockerbie this week.
On Tuesday these photos emerged of damage to a field in the town after unknown riders went for a spin.
Further sightings of the bikes followed, with reports they had been seen in Dryfeholm at the weekend, when they were not using lights or helmets.
They were also spotted in Kintail Park and Academy Place.
Meanwhile, on Monday police confirmed there had been an increase in calls over the past four weeks from concerned members of the public regarding dirt bikes rampaging around the area.
Bikes being used include small motocross and electric bikes. They are being ridden at speed on and off-road, while the riders often have their faces covered and are not wearing any safety gear.
Speaking at Annan Community Council on Monday evening, PC Stephen Glendinning addressed the wider issue.
He said: “There’s been quite an increase in calls in regards to youths on motorcycles.
“We are having to be careful going after them as well as we are only covered so much. We have got to be careful that we don’t cause them to collide with someone.”
PC Glendinning mentioned that some bikes had been seized, while other culprits were being watched closely. There had also been plain clothes patrols taking place.
He added that the issue was regionwide, adding: “It’s not just happening here, it’s happening all over.
“Dumfries is getting it, there’s been incidents in Lockerbie and in Sanquhar.
“It’s something that is quite a hot topic at the moment, and it’s something we are continuing to look at.”
