Disaster documentary announced

ANOTHER documentary is going to be made on the Lockerbie disaster, with promises it will 'do justice to this complex story'.

Mindhouse Productions are about to start filming for the new show, provisionally entitled ‘Lockerbie’, in association with Sky Studios.

The producers say the documentary will “tell the incredible true story of Britain’s deadliest terrorist atrocity when 270 people lost their lives on the night of December 21 1988.”

They will be speaking to victims’ families, investigators, intelligence officers and others.

The blurb for the three-parter adds: “The series will examine unanswered questions and explore the truth behind the atrocity to provide a definitive account of the bombing and its aftermath and – ultimately – who was responsible. ”

It will be directed by John Dower, who said: “I vividly remember Lockerbie from my teenage years of growing up in a Scottish household, but revisiting the event over 30 years later realised how little I knew about the actual event and the way it continues to reverberate down the years.

“I feel a real responsibility not only to the complexity of the story but also to the families on both sides of the Atlantic.:

Explaining the decision to explore the bombing of Pan Am 103, executive producer Nancy Strang said: “The shocking story of the Lockerbie bombing is remarkably under told in documentary form, especially given the scale of the attack and human loss, and its global repercussions.

“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to hear from those closest to the story – particularly the families involved.”

Sky spokeswoman Poppy Dixon described the project as a ‘forensic deep dive’, adding: “The rigorous and thoughtful approach that John and the team are taking leaves me in no doubt this series will do justice to this complex story.”

Mindhouse Productions was set up by well known documentary maker Louis Theroux, but it has been confirmed that he will not present the show.

News of the filming has ruffled a few feathers locally with one local man, tweeting under the handle @DrW0mbat said: “What’s done is done. This will only be another attempt to establish the perpetrators. The truth is buried deep somewhere and unlikely to be uncovered. Leave alone.”

Previous programmes on the tragedy have included Lockerbie: A Night Remembered; The Lockerbie Bombing; My Brother’s Bomber; Lockerbie: Case Closed; The Maltese Double Cross; The Tragedy of Flight 103: The Inside Story; and Since: The Bombing of Pan Am Flight 103.
