Double medal for Solway skaters

THE region’s ice skaters have closed the season strongly, bringing home two medals at the weekend.

Teams from Solway Skating Club spent the weekend competing in the Steel City Trophy Competition in Sheffield. Over 70 teams took to the ice at the three day competition and among them were three teams from Solway Skating Club.

First to skate on Friday evening were Solway Eclipse who delivered an electrifying performance to Jukebox Hero and I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” from Rock of Ages, scoring an impressive 65.36 to win gold.

Later in the day, the club’s ISU Junior team, Solway Stars performed their short programme to Taylor Swift’s ‘Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me’. They captivated the audience with an emotional and engaging skate scoring 49.11 points to round out the first day of competition.

The competition continued on Saturday with Solway Lightening’s beautiful skate to Dumbo’s ‘Baby Mine’ scoring an amazing 38.93 points. This put them into 4th place just missing out on a medal.

Solway Stars then returned to the ice for their free programme, an enchanting and elegant routine to ‘Circles’ by Ludovico Einaudi and Greta Svabo Bech, which earned them a combined score of 138.91 for their two skates, securing them a silver medal.

Commenting on the weekend’s results a spokesperson for Solway Skating club said: “We are so proud of our talented skaters and as always, so grateful for our sponsors and supporters that allow them to have such amazing opportunities and experiences.

A massive thank you to our inspiring coaches- Gemma, David and Natalya -that continue to push these athletes to be the best they can be. Your support on and off the ice throughout the season has had such a positive impact on all of our skaters.

“Lastly, we would like to thank all of our team managers, chaperones and committee members for their voluntary work to support the club and its skaters. We are so grateful to have such a supportive community working around us.”
