Drivers needed for book event

A CALL has gone out for volunteer drivers to help transport authors, politicians and speakers during the Wigtown Book Festival.

The team behind the annual Book Festival need volunteer drivers for this year’s event being held between September 26 and October 4.
Festival guests this year  include Val McDermid, Vince Cable, Christopher Brookmyre, Mairi Hedderwick, Alex Salmond, Frank Gardner and Liz Lochhead.
Speakers need to be collected from airports, stations, buses and ferries before being driven to the town.
Last year the team of dedicated drivers undertook almost 400 journeys to and from transport hubs to ensure guests arrived safely and on time.
This year with more speakers taking part in the ten-day programme than ever before the Book Festival team is hoping that additional drivers will get on board and they are keen to hear particularly from volunteers in the Dumfries and Carlisle areas.
Driver co-ordinator Kenny Barr said: “By having drivers based around the region it gives us much more flexibility in managing the journeys.
“The festival relies heavily on a team of more than 100 volunteers to ensure its smooth running.”
