That’s the message from the manager of a Dumfries and Galloway drug and alcohol support service, after new figures showed there wer 12 drug-related deaths locally last year.
Chris Walker, service manager at WithYou in Dumfries and Galloway, says: “While I am pleased to see the number of drug-related deaths reduced, 12 deaths are still too many and my thoughts are with all those who have lost a loved one.
“I want to reassure people who are worried about their drug use, or that of a loved one, that support is available in Dumfries and Galloway and recovery is possible. Please do not hesitate to get in touch – we are WithYou.”
The charity has bases in Dumfries and Stranraer and works across the region, offering free and confidential support, without judgement, to adults facing challenges with drugs and alcohol.
Chris said: “While effective and innovative work is taking place across Scotland, so much more needs to be done to address this public health crisis.
“I believe that drug support services should not be delivered in isolation because, while drugs may be a significant issue in a person’s life, they will not be the only issue.
“Employment opportunities, availability of housing, and access to health and mental health services are all vital aspects – but it’s about so much more than simply surviving. It’s about ensuring that people have the opportunity to thrive.”
