Dumfries claim league title!

A COMMANDING win by leaders Dumfries over third placed Renfrew meant that the Nunholm side won the Western Premiership 2 league title.

An excellent century by opener Chris Bellwood, with a score of 110, set up a big total for the home side of 257 for 4.

Fellow opener Adam Malik contributed 32 runs and Chris Brockwell continued his batting form in hitting 68.

James Hobman then took two wickets in the first over and Renfrew struggled to recover.

That start was reinforced by a skilful spell of spin bowling by Brockwell that claimed five further wickets and Callum Reynolds-Lewis kept ahead as the club’s leading wicket taker in the league with a further three as Renfrew were all out for 83 for a massive 174 run victory.

That win put Dumfries beyond the reach of second placed Kelburne, who lost, to claim the league title with two games still to play. The two Chris’s, Bellwood and Brockwell, shared the Crosbie Roofing Player of the Match award.

In Western Championship Two, leaders Dumfries 2nd XI, Nunholm, were defeated by three wickets in a close game at third placed GHK Strathclyde to slip to second place.

Nunholm play current leaders Hillhead 2nds on Saturday at home in a match that should determine the final league winners.

On Sunday, Dumfries Under-16s played their first ever semi-final at the U16 Scottish Cup Finals Day at Perth but lost out to Gordonians. A score of 39 not out from Billy Morgan took Dumfries to 83 for 6 after the 20 overs.

Munro Cubbon then took two wickets and Cory Dawson one as the Aberdeen side reached their target for the loss of three wickets.

In the third and fourth place play-off Dumfries U16s finished with four wins out of five in an impressive Cup run with a good win against Uddingston to claim ‘Best in the West’.
