The right-of-way linking the town with Newbie and the Solway coast was once a main route for Cochran Boiler Works employees cycling to work, but is now still used by both locals and visitors.
However, following recent high winds and larger than usual tides it has been closed.
A spokesman for Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “We attended Friday last week and rodded the main carrier pipe. There was a minor blockage within the pipe which has now been cleared.
“The sweeper was also sent down Tuesday after the flooding to clean all the gullies and manholes out.”
