Election night live

COUNTING is underway at DG1 Leisure Centre in Dumfries for the 2024 General Election.

Some candidates and their supporters are already here and boxes are continually arriving from across the region.

The result for the Dumfries and Galloway and the Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale seats are expected between 4-5 am.

Stay with us for the latest news.

1.15 am the final ballot box arrived from the DG constituency, says Returning Officer Dawn Roberts.

Meanwhile, more candidates are starting to arrive – we’ve seen Lib Dems Iain McDonald and Drummond Begg, Greens Dominic Ashmole and Laura Moodie, SNP Tracey Little, Labour’s James Wallace, Gareth Kirk of the Scottish Family Party and David Kirkwood, Reform.

4.05 am: Furniture is getting moved here after the parties complained about visibility. As a result, the count is running late and the result is going to be at least another 1.5 hours.

4.30 am: Turnout was lower than expected locally at 58.5% in Dumfries and Galloway and 61.7% in Dumfriesshire, Clydesdale and Tweeddale.

6.23am: the sun is up and the early swimmers are arriving at DG1 – but we’re still waiting on the result here in the counting hall. It’s now estimated to be 7.30am.

7.44 am: votes are still being counted – looks like this region will be one of the last to declare in Scotland.
