EU Referendum

POLLING stations have closed and counting for the EU Referendum has begun in Dumfries.

Council staff will work through the night at the Easterbrook Hall counting the votes.

And the regional result is expected at approx. 4am on Friday morning.

Voting was brisk across the region on Thursday. Dumfriesshire MP David Mundell voted Remain, but on social media he urged everyone to respect the result.

Meanwhile, Colin Smyth MSP (Lab) spent the day doing a spot of final campaigning, while his Scottish Parliament counterpart Joan McAlpine (SNP) met some members of the Basque Government and Spanish Senate in Edinburgh.

National polls are putting the Remain side ahead at approx 52 per cent – but there’s widespread speculation on news sites online of a high Leave vote in Dumfries and Galloway. Keep an eye on this website to see who’s right!
