Family fundraiser aims to thank air rescue team

A LOCHMABEN family are putting their best feet forward to raise funds after a near fatal accident hit close to home.

Alison and Fiona Rogerson are currently preparing for the Great North Run in September.

The mother-daughter duo are taking part in the 13.1 mile race and fundraising for The Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) in honour of husband and father Peter, who was rescued and helped by the team back in December.

Fiona explained: “Their doctor-led critical care team delivered life-saving treatment to our dad at the remote scene of his road bike accident in Eskdalemuir in December 2023, where he lay on the road with a shattered pelvis in numerous places, several fractured ribs and clavicle bone requiring ICU care for numerous days.

“As a family, it was dark times, the unknown of dad’s recovery, we relied upon our strong family unit to keep dad battling on through the tough days to get him strong again to face the world.”

Alison and Fiona are seasoned runners but have never done the Great North Run as a team, so to bring a little fun to race day they will be dressing up as Toy Story’s Buzz and Woody.

Then in October Alison and her other daughter Sarah will be taking on the Glasgow half marathon.

And they’re hoping not to just raise awareness of the charity but the importance of wearing a helmet, as that is what saved Peter’s life before the crew got to him.

Former midwife Alison added: “Peter has been recovering remarkably well and we’re so thankful to the air ambulance team and all the hospital staff that he’s still with us.

“In a rural area like ours it’s so important to have a team like air ambulance because a land ambulance would’ve have taken much longer to get to him.

His helmet was split in the accident but that helmet definitely saved his head from injury – otherwise who knows what could have happened.

“Hopefully when we’ve done both races we can go down to Penrith and thank them in person.”
