THE latest phase of Forestry and Land Scotland’s (FLS) felling work in Mabie Forest will mean that for safety reasons the playpark and the lower part of the car park will be closed as from today, Monday January 13.
It’s anticipated that the facilities will re-open in time for the Easter holidays.
The forestry operations are part of FLS’ ongoing efforts to slow the spread of the disease, Phytophthora ramorum, that kills larch trees.
Area visitor service manager Katharina Koehler said: “We’re making good progress in felling and removing the affected, dying and dead larch trees.
“Public safety is our top priority so it is necessary to close the playpark and car park to keep everyone away from our felling operations, which are inherently dangerous.
“We would again advise anyone coming to Mabie to observe all safety signage and detours, follow any instructions from our banksmen and be mindful of the fact that there will be more timber lorries travelling along the forest road through the main forest.”

She explained that the disease has had a dramatic impact on forests and larch trees are steadily becoming less visible in the landscape.
And the only way to slow the spread– for which there is no known cure or remedy – is to fell and remove affected, dying and dead larch trees in order to create a ‘buffer’ between areas of infection and unaffected forests.
FLS is working hard to minimise the impact on neighbours and visitors, who are encourage to check the latest up-to-date information online before arriving at Mabie.
Dog walkers are also advised that if near the main forest road they should keep their dogs under control.
Access to the toilets will be maintained.
