PLANS for a new 1.8 metre high fence surrounding the perimeter of Annan Academy, the swimming pool and games hall were on view to the public earlier this week.
A drop in event, hosted by Dumfries and Galloway Council schools’ manager Larann Foss and Annandale South ward officer Jaime Nicholson, took place inside the foyer of Annan Swimming Pool on Wednesday afternoon.
Drawings of the planned security improvements gave details on the project which, it is understood, education officials want completed before the summer holidays.
Security improvements come in the wake of a spate of incidents, including electric bikes entering the campus during the school day and pupils being chased by dogs.
As part of the improvements, there will be four new gates installed, one at each corner of the playing fields.
On the drop-in, a Dumfries and Galloway Council spokesman said: “Fifty-three people attended, and it was all positive. No suggestions were made to the plans as such, but we talked through them with individuals as they came in.
“The works are out to tender and we’re awaiting the returns so they can be evaluated, then awarded to the successful contractor, who will then be asked to progress the works.
“A timeline will be confirmed once the tender has been awarded.”
It was confirmed there is no plan for a further event and the plans are not available to view online.
A plan to erect a fence around the school has been a topic of discussion for many years.
But it was not until after the incident regarding bikes on the school playing field that action was prompted.
Parent council chair Vicky Keir last month said: “It absolutely does need addressed. We have talked about this for many many years.”
Annandale South councillor George Jamieson also added: “Our schools must be a safe place, where children and staff are comfortable.”
The playing fields have long been a recreational area for dog walkers and members of the public.
And, while this has been recognised, the consensus is that staff and pupil safety must always be the priority.
However, the fields could still be used outwith school hours, if treated with respect.
A council spokesman previously said: “If the areas are not misused then they could be left open after hours, weekends and holidays.
“The council has a duty of care to protect pupils, staff and our property, and it is hoped the temporary gating and fencing will see a reduction in this anti-social behaviour on this site.”
