KEEN hill runners will have the chance to tackle Galloway’s peaks in December at the Cairnsmore Hill Race.
The event on Saturday December 14 is being organised by British long-distance runner Nicola Spinks and supported by Galloway Mountain Rescue Team, with the blessing of, and thanks to, the retiring race organiser Mark Hannay.
The 17.5 kilometre route will see runners head out over Knocktim to climb steeply through the Door of Cairnsmore, then head north along the Knee of Cairnsmore to reach the summit of Cairnsmore of Fleet at the trig.
Turning south west from the trig, they can then enjoy a long descent right down to the finish.
Entries are now open for the race which is for over 18s, with fell running experience and navigation skills.
Organisers have also stressed the importance of winter racing experience, they said: “As it’s a winter race and it could be run in full winter conditions, Galloway Mountain Rescue marshals will be out on the course taking numbers at checkpoints, providing first aid cover and generously serving up hot soup and refreshments at the finish.”
