Firm in first-of-its kind deal

A DUMFRIES company is ending the year on a high after securing a pioneering North Sea deal.

The Carbon Removers, based at Crofthead, have signed a breakthrough deal to sequester 50,000 tonnes of CO2 permanently in a depleted oil field, 1800 metres below the North Sea seabed.

The full-scale carbon storage facility will be a European first.

It will be part of Greensand Future, the EU’s first operational CO2 storage facility intended to mitigate climate change, operated by INEOS. Greensand Future aims to safely capture and permanently store 400,000 tons of CO2 each year from the end of 2025, with a potential to store up to 8,000,000 tons of CO2 per annum.

Richard Nimmons, CEO of The Carbon Removers, above, said: “We believe the North Sea has a huge role to play in helping Europe achieve its Net Zero target. We’re delighted to be the first UK company to partner with Greensand Future operators, who share our ethos of finding practical ways to address emissions today, not in the distant future.”

Meanwhile, First Minister John Swinney heard all about the deal when he visited the company last week.

Mr Swinney was impressed by what he heard and said: “It is inspiring to see companies like The Carbon Removers leading the way in delivering permanent carbon solutions.”

“By focusing on carbon removal, they are helping Scotland tackle the climate crisis while creating opportunities for future generations.”

South of Scotland Enterprise helped facilitate the visit and chair Professor Russel Griggs OBE said: “We have worked closely with The Carbon Removers from the beginning of their journey and are delighted to see the exciting progress they have made, which is currently taking them into new international markets.”

And Mr Nimmons said they were honoured to welcome the First Minister, adding: “By focusing on permanent carbon removal through mineralisation, we are not just addressing today’s climate challenges but creating a sustainable pathway for the future.

“Our work aims to ensure CO2 is permanently removed from the atmosphere, supporting industries and governments in their shared goal of a net-zero world.”
