First four point weekend of season for Solway
THRILLING WIN . . . the Solway Sharks beat the Bristol Pitbulls 5-4 after overtime on Saturday

At Dumfries Ice Bowl, the hosts claimed the two points in a thrilling 5-4 OT victory. And on Sunday they wrapped up their first four point weekend of the season with another classic, which ended in a 6-5 victory away to Hull Seahawks.

John Dunbar fired the puck top-corner at 1:03 to give Solway an early edge against the Pitbulls, before skipper Liam Stenton put the Sharks 2-0 up in the second period.

Olivier Arseneau was next to capitalise from the slot with a low shot through traffic.

The Pitbulls converted a five-on-three opportunity through Nick Pryce with a wrist shot at 31:40 to bring themselves back into the game.

Bristol’s top goal-scorer Pryce soon fired again on a breakaway.

Bristol returned for the final period with fight and equalised through Ewan Hill who fired top corner at 41.40.

After controlling the puck around the zone, Mason Alderson threaded it into the net at 52:13 to re-claim the lead for Solway. But, with just 58 seconds remaining, Rhys Smetham fired home an equalising goal.

The Sharks dominated in overtime and Canadian import Nolan Gardiner netted at 64:07 to seal the victory for Solway.

On Sunday Solway completed their first four point weekend of the 24/25 season with a thrilling 5-6 victory over the Seahawks at the Hull Ice Arena.

The Sharks started in the same fashion as Saturday, opening the scoring in the first few minutes of play through Alderson.

After a shift in momentum, the Seahawks found an equalising goal at 6:56 thanks to Owen Sobchak.

Solway’s top goal scorer Gardiner added another to his tally early in the second period.

Alderson struck again at 33:17 to extend the lead to 1-3. However, within the same minute, Emil Svec answered back from the left wing for Hull.

A turnover in puck possession by the Seahawks allowed Svec to go and grab his second of the period and tie the score once more.

Sharks captain Stenton soon fired the fourth past Zimozdra from point at 39:32.

Hull levelled the scores early in the third period through Svec. But Solway’s skipper wasted no time in securing the lead for the visitors with a strike from point that landed top shelf into the net.

Late on Caly Robertson sealed an empty-netter for the Sharks, putting them 4-6 ahead.

Hull threw everything at it and Owen Bruton fired a fifth goal for the Seahawks with just seconds to spare.

Sharks forward, Mason Alderson said: “This weekend was a real team effort, with everyone pitching in when it counted most.

“We won both games thanks to great goaltending, and important players performed well under pressure.

“Our team’s resilience and depth were shown in these back-to-back wins, which include a hard-fought battle in Hull and that incredible overtime success on Saturday.

“As far as, a four-point weekend, this is a huge boost, and we as a team intend to build on these performances.”

The Sharks return to Dumfries on Saturday to take on the Telford Tigers. Doors open at 5.30 pm for a 7 pm face-off. Tickets are available now online or in person at the ice bowl.
