First novel from professor out next week

PROFESSOR David Clark will debut his first novel in Thornhill next week.

The Dalswinton based professor previously pursued a career in sociology and led a University of Glasgow research team at the Crichton Campus, before turning his hand to fiction.

His first book ‘Epiphanies and Robberies’ is set in Dumfries and Galloway and follows the story of three people drawn together as a series of art thefts sweeps across the region. In one tumultuous year, bereaved GP Andrew Carlyle Stuart, work-obsessed academic Michael Gilmour and struggling musician Anne-Marie Maxwell go on a journey of surprise and discovery.

Giving more insight into his debut novel, David said: “I think of Epiphanies and Robberies as a feel good mystery story, with substance.

“The novel is set here in the beautiful landscape and changing seasons of south west Scotland. But I have mixed up and blurred chronologies, geographies and biographies.

“The first drafts of my debut novel were written in ‘real time’ and serialised on my website, month by month, throughout 2023. It’s all interwoven with bigger questions about sustainability, rural communities, working life, and personal relationships.”

David will be talking about his book at a free event at Thomas Tosh in Thornhill on Tuesday, June 17, from 7.30 pm, for more information visit the Thomas Tosh website.
