A DUMFRIES man has become claimed the title of Britain’s fittest farmer 2023.
Organised by leading agricultural magazine Farmers Weekly, the competition champions fitness and mental wellbeing of farmers across the nation.
The competition was established to spark vital discussion about the health of farmers as their occupation slowly becomes less active and more mechanised and office-based.
This year, 28-year-old John Carlisle from Dumfries scooped up the win for the men under 40 category, with Heidi Wilson and Richard Peck taking the women under 40 and over 40 categories respectively.
John known across the region’s farming industry as part of Nether Dargarvel, his father-son beef and sheep farm in Dumfries.
John said: “I’m absolutely over the moon. It’s been a great competition and it’s only getting stronger every year.
“I’ve taken part in this competition for the last three years, and I’ve been mixing gym, running and training both at home and with a running club to basically become good at everything.
“I’ve got my sights set on the 2024 competition now, and I’m aiming to defend my title.”
