POLICE have welcomed a five year jail sentence given to a Dumfries man found guilty of rape.

Steven McMath, 24, was sentenced at Edinburgh High Court this week, where he continued to claim he was innocent.

The sexual offences involved two women and took place in the Dumfries area in 2018 and in 2021. They were described by a judge in Edinburgh as “very serious crimes”.

McMath was found guilty of the charges following a trial at Glasgow High Court last month.

Commenting, Detective Inspector Kelly Douglas, of the Public Protection Unit, said: “McMath is an abusive individual who showed no remorse for his abusive behaviour. I would like to commend the women for their bravery in coming forward during the investigation and I hope this outcome provides them with some sense of closure.

“If anyone is experiencing, or has experienced domestic or sexual abuse, please do not hesitate to contact us directly or through one of our partner agencies.”
