PUPILS at Lockerbie Academy who get transport to school are being sent home.

Due to travel concerns, bus companies are sending vehicles to collect students.

Meanwhile, motorists have reported the A709 – Lockerbie to Dumfries road – is closed at Shillahill Bridge due to rising flood waters.

And DG VOST, the local authority’s emergency response team, has confirmed the closure.

Cars, vans and lorries have become trapped in flood waters on the Lochmaben side of the bridge, social media images have shown.

Closures have also been put in place at Whitesands in Dumfries, where water has covered the road and both car parks.

Most shops and businesses on the Whitesands have closed for the day and have placed sandbags at their entrances.

A video from The Frothy Bike Co shows water in the front door of the Coach and Horses and Domino records.

Bike shop owner said: “It’s the highest flood we’ve seen for a while.”

Peak water flow has been estimated for around 4 pm this afternoon, and high tide at 5 pm.

Elsewhere, minor roads are impassable around Millhousebridge and Templand.

There are also reports of lots of standing water on the A709 between Burnside Farm and the 30mph signs for Lochmaben, as well as the Lochmaben to Parkgate road.

Furthermore, Lochmaben resident Lynne Dickson has notified people that the road is impassable at Mossburn and other reports have come in to say that the road between Annan and Lockerbie, via Hoddom, is impassable in places.

Further local closures confirmed by Police Scotland:

A762 at Waterside & Lochside Point,
U2s Coombs Bridge
B727 East of Gelston
U357w Riverside Road
Please avoid the area & find an alternative route.
Drive safely & allow extra travel time.
