Flooding hits region

HEAVY rainfall resulted in the return of flooding to the region on Tuesday, with the Nith in Dumfries bursting its banks.

A high tide combined with heavy winds and rain to see the Nith flooding onto the Whitesands at lunchtime.

The waters also breached walls at the Kingholm Quay, and the River Annan flooded onto the Everholm and over the burgh quay at Annan Harbour, while roads around the region became treacherous with standing surface water.

Further heavy rain was predicted to spread across Northern Ireland and much of Scotland overnight, where it was forecast to turn into snow on the hills.
