VOLUNTEERS for Dumfriesshire Foodbank visited Tesco Dumfries this week to collect donations for the Trussell Trust and Fareshare.
They were joined by store manager Sean McCarter, pupils from Dumfries High School and South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth.
A winter food collection in store gathered 1068 meals donations from local customers, with two million in total being gathered across the country.
Colin Smyth said: “There is no reason at all why anyone should be going hungry in a wealthy nation like Scotland.
“However, the evidence is clear – thousands of local people are in food poverty.
“That is why initiatives like the Tesco Winter Food Collection are so important to charities who provide support for so many people.
“I’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated and also to store manager Sean, Tesco community champion Anne, Crystal at Dumfriesshire Foodbank and all their tireless volunteers, and the amazing pupils from Dumfries High who came along and helped out.”
