Footpath mystery

ANSWERS are being sought to find out who owns a footpath along the River Annan after a section of it has been left broken up for several years.

The path in question runs between Annan Road Bridge and the Millennium Bridge, at a section just outside of Old Mill Court it has been left broken, with barriers up, for several years.

Now Old Mill Court resident Peter Davis is trying to get to the bottom of who is responsible for the path’s upkeep before it gets worse or someone gets injured.

He said: “I have been here just over three and a half years, and I believe the path has been like that for several years. Nobody knows who owns it.

“There was somebody who came out and he said he would come and do it tomorrow, but who’s going to pay for it? I was told the path was done for the Jubilee.”

When Dumfries and Galloway Council were asked about the path ownership, a spokesman said: “The council does not own the land and is not responsible for the maintenance of this footpath.

“The title for the land would appear to be in the name of the owners of the development.”

However, Peter was certain the original deeds show that the land belonging to the Old Mill Court development stops at the end of the grass, almost as if the footpath has been forgotten about.

He added: “The council are not even sending someone down to make sure it’s safe. I understand it’s probably going to be low on the list of priorities, but it’s been several years.

“Every time there’s a high tide it’s just washing it and it’s eventually going to go.

“Who paid for it (in the first place) and who’s going to repair it?”

Other neighbours had also cited their concerns.
